| inferring | using hidden/non-stated clues to make an assumption or guess |
| evidence | details to supports a main point |
| paraphrasing | shortening a quote by eliminating irrelevant words |
| categorization/classification | grouping items based on similiarities |
| bibliography | a section at the end of an essay that lists the source |
| text structures | the way a passage is organized |
| cause and effect | the reason something happens and what the outcome is of the event |
| problem and solution | when text is organized by an issue and a way to solve it |
| description | when a text is organized by using strong adjectives and adverbs |
| chronological order | when events are in order by the time they occurred |
| sequencing | putting items in order in which they occur |
| compare and contrast | when a passage is organized by explaining how two things are different and alike |
| fact and opinion | one is true and can be supported;the other is feelings, thoughts or ideas |
