Physics - Energy (Apologia Physical Science M 8A)

QuestionAnswer
energy the ability to do work
Any object in motion will have kinetic energy.
potential energy energy that is stored as a result of position or shape
gravitational potential energy potential energy that depends upon an object's height or position above the Earth
PE = m*g*h (g stands for acceleration due to gravity)
Any object that can be stretched or compressed has elastic potential energy.
One way to reduce experimental error (which naturally occurs during experiments) is to conduct multiple trials and average the results.
mechanical energy the sum of an object's potential energy and kinetic energy
thermal energy the total kinetic energy of moving atoms and molecules of an object
chemical energy the energy stored in the chemical bonds of the molecules that make up a substance
electrical energy the energy associated with moving charged particles
electromagnetic energy (also called radiant or light energy) a form of energy that is reflected or emitted from objects and travels through space in the form of waves
sound energy a form of mechanical energy; carried by sound waves
nuclear energy the energy stored by the forces that hold the nucleus of an atom together
nuclear fission a process that releases energy by splitting atomic nuclei apart
nuclear fusion nuclei of smaller atoms are combined or fused together to form a larger atom
energy conversion the process of changing from one form of energy to another
law of conservation of energy energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another or transferred from one object to another
closed system a system where nothing can enter or leave
KE (aka kinetic energy) = (1/2) (m) (v^2)
The energy people use comes from the energy stored in the chemical bonds of the food they ate.
Because a ball is moving, it has kinetic energy.
Kinetic energy is directly proportional to the mass and the speed squared.
J stands for Joules which means kg times meters squared divided by seconds squared.
Kinetic energy can be transferred from one object to another such as in billiards.
The sun is the source (either directly or indirectly) of most of the Earth's energy supplies because it radiates electromagnetic energy through space in waves.
Radiant energy does not need to touch other matter to transfer its energy.
Light energy is the only form of energy that we can directly see.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
