| Acute Phase | symptoms are present consistently for at least ONE month |
| Prodromal Symptoms | symptoms occurred before acute phase |
| Residual Symptoms | symptoms remain after the acute phase |
| Psychosis | inability to differentiate between whats real & whats unreal |
| Positive Symptoms | delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized behavior |
| Negative Symptoms | lack of expected or normal emotions, behaviors (motor retardation, catatonia), & motivations |
| Delusions | ideas that an individual believes to be true that are highly unlikely/impossible |
| Hallucinations | perceptual (5 senses) experiences that occur without an actual stimulus |
| Catatonia | Disorganized (motor) behavior that reflects unresponsiveness to the environment |
| Restricted Affect | Severe reduction in or absence of emotional expression |
| Avolition/Asociality | Inability to initiate or persist at common, goal-directed activities (also seen in ADHD) |
| Cognitive Deficits | Deficits in basic cognitive processes, including attention, memory, & processing speed |

| Brief Psychotic Disorder | schizophrenic symptoms lasting for ONE day to ONE month with a FULL return to normal functioning |
| Schizophreniform Disorder | Schizophrenic symptoms lasting for at least ONE month and NOT MORE than six months |
| Tardive Dyskinesia | side effect of antipsychotic drug resulting in involuntary movement of the tongue, face, mouth, & jaw |
