| Short-term Memory | Holds small amounts of information in conscious awareness for a dozen seconds or so |
| Selective Attention | focusing on a selected portion of sensory input; controls what information moves on to short-term memory |
| Long-term Memory | Memory system used for relatively permanent storage of meaningful information |
| Chunking | Information that can be grouped together into one chunk |
| Maintenance Rehearsal | silently repeating or mentally reviewing information to hold it in short-term memory longer |
| Rate Learning | learning by simple repetition |
| Elaborative Encoding | links new information to memories that are already in long-term memory |
| Redintegration | The process by which memories are reconstructed or expanded by starting with one memory and then following chains of association to other, related memory |
| Tip-of-the Tongue State | the feeling that a memory is available but not quite retrievable |
| Feeling of Knowing | a feeling that allows people to prejudice beforehand whether they will be able to remember something |
| Déjà vu | the illusion that you have already experienced a new situation that you are actually seeing for the first time |

| Recall | to supply or reproduce memorized information with a minimum of external cues |
| Recognition | An ability to correctly identify previously learned information |

| Implicit Memory | Memories that a person does not know exists; a memory that is retrieved unconsciously |
| Priming | Facilitating the retrieval of an implicit memory by using cues to activate hidden memories |

| Memory Traces | A term indicating the change in the nervous system representing an event. |
