| atom | the basic particle from which all elements are made |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus |
| mass number | the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus |
| chemical symbol | usually a one or two letter representation of an element |
| periodic table | a chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties |
| isotope | an atom with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons |
| Dmitri Mendeleev | the father of the periodic table |
| group / family | a vertical column of elements on the periodic table |
| volume | the amount of space something takes up |
| 7 | the number of periods on the periodic table |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| 18 | the number of groups / families on the periodic table |
| proton | a particle with a positive (+) electrical charge |
| electron cloud | the area that surrounds the nucleus |
| neutron | a particle with no electrical charge |
| nucleus | the center of an atom; made up of protons and neutrons |
| electron | a particle with a negative (-) electrical charge |
| particle | an extremely tiny piece of matter |
| molecule | two or more atoms bonded together |
