What is Personality? An individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting.
Personality psychologists examine individual and group differences and try to explain how one’s personality develops.
How can personality be measured? Self-report surveys Peer ratings Observations Projective Tests Standardized Tests
Trait a characteristic pattern of behavior a disposition to feel and act, as assessed by self-report inventories and peer reports
Openness trait Curious, open to new ideas, creative, original
Consciousness trait Organized, systematic, achievement oriented, punctual, dependable.
Extraversion trait Outgoing, talkative, sociable, enjoys being in social situations,
Agreeableness trait tolerant, sensitive, trusting, kind, and warm.
Neuroticism Anxious, irritable, temperamental, and moody.
Down sides of the trait perspective: Doesn't explain personality(why people have the traits they do).
Freuds Theory: Proposes that childhood sexuality and unconscious motivations influence personality.
