Brain terms/functions (simple)

TermDefinition
Amygdala emotion regulation, fear/fight-or-flight response, implicit memory & behavior, learning; almond shaped; part of temporal lobe and limbic system, level with eyes
Broca's Area important to speech production, language comprehension, motor-related activities with hand movement, and sensorimotor learning & integration; frontal left hemisphere of brain
Corpus Callosum bundle of nerve fibers that enables communication between right and left hemispheres of the brain
Hippocampus long-term memory storage; inner temporal lobe; part of limbic system
Hypothalamus located at the base of the brain; involved in many bodily functions, including regulating body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, and the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
Pons transmit signals between your forebrain and cerebellum, handles unconscious processes and jobs, such as sleep-wake cycle and breathing; “bulging” part of part of brainstem“
Thalamus relay motor and sensory information to the cerebral cortex
Medulla located at the base of the brainstem, "bulging"; responsible for controlling vital autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
Wernicke's Area language comprehension, semantic/grammar processing, language recognition, and language interpretation; temporal lobe of left hemisphere
Reticular Formation Involved in consciousness, wakefulness, and stereotyped behavior; plays a fundamental role in arousal and consciousness, control of movement and sensation, and in regulation of visceral functions
