Unit 3b Bio Vocab

Cellular Respiration & Respiratory System

TermDefinition
Mitochondrion organelle that performs cellular respiration
Cellular Respiration chemical reaction that occurs in the mitochondrion that makes ATP
ATP adenosine triphosphate- usable energy for the cell
Aerobic Respiration respiration that uses oxygen
Anaerobic Respiration respiration that does not use oxygen-occurs when oxygen is not present. Makes less ATP and makes lactic acid or alcohol as a waste product.
Products of Cellular Respiration ATP, carbon dioxide, and water
Reactants of Cellular Respiration oxygen and glucose
Equation for Cellular Respiration O2+C6H12O6-->ATP+CO2+H2O
Yeast single-celled fungus
Lactic Acid a product of anaerobic respiration that causes muscle fatigue
Feedback mechanism a process by which organisms maintain homeostasis by sensing and responding to stimuli
Negative Feedback causes a process to stop or for less of a product to be made
Positive Feedback causes a process to continue or for more of a product to be made
Stimulus A change in the environment
Sensor Part of the body that detects stimuli from the environment.
Response How our bodies react to stimuli
Regulation the processes organisms use to maintain homeostasis. Ex) feedback mechanisms
Mitochondrion organelle that performs cellular respiration to make ATP
Capillary tiny blood vessels that exchange materials between the cells and blood
Alveoli Air sacs in the lungs that perform gas exchange.
Trachea also known as the windpipe- transports air to the bronchi
Diaphragm muscle that contracts and relaxes to allow us to inhale and exhale
Lung The organ of the respiratory system where gas exchange occurs
Muscle Fatigue the feeling of tiredness that occurs when lactic acid is made by anaerobic respiration
Vein carries blood from cells to heart
Artery carries blood from heart to cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
