Mechanical Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic energy | The energy due to motion |
| Potential energy | Energy due to interactions between objects or particles when distance changes Stored energy |
| Elastic potential energy | Energy stored in objects that are compressed or stretched |
| Gravitational potential energy | Stored energy due to interactions of objects in a gravitational field |
| Mechanical energy | The sum of the potential energy and kinetic energy in a system |
| Law of conservation of energy | States that, although energy is always transferring from one form to another energy is not created or destroyed |
| Work | The transfer of energy to an object by a force that makes an object move in the direction of the force; force applied over distance |
| Power | The rate at which work is done |
| Mechanical advantage | The ratio of a machines output, force produced to the input force applied |
| Efficiency | And the ratio of output work to the input work |
| Simple machine | A machine that does work using only one movement |
