TSHPS: Psychobiology: The Brain Terms

| CT Scan or CAT Scan | Used to study brain structure with a series of x-rays. |
| MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) | Used to study brain structure using magnetic fields and radio waves. |
| fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) | Used to study functions using magnetic fields and radio waves to display oxygen laden areas. |
| EEG (electroencephalogram) | Used to study brain function using amplified recordings of waves of electrical activity. Can be used to diagnose sleep or seizure disorders. |
| PET Scan | Used to study brain function using the detection of brain cells where radioactive glucose is absorbed. |
| Brainstem | Oldest, innermost part of the brain. |
| Medulla | Sits at the base of the brain stem and controls heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, and circulation. |
| Pons | Located above the medulla and control motor control and relays information to cerebellum. |
| Cerebellum | Attached to the rear of the brain stem. Coordinates voluntary movement and balance. |
| Reticular Formation | Travels through the brain stem and controls arousal and awakeness. Brainstem is the cross over point. |
