Divide | a high point or ridge that determines the direction of river flow |
Head water | the source of a stream or river |
Fall Line | a boundary in the eastern United States where the higher land of the Piedmont drops to the lower Atlantic Coastal Plain. |
Hurricane | a large powerful windstorm that forms over warm ocean waters. |
Underground railroad | a network of sage houses in the United States that helped thousands of enslaved people escape to freedom. |
Dry farming | a farming method used in dry regions in which crops are grown that rely only on natural precipitation. |
Manufacturing Belt | a concentrated region of manufacturing industries in the northeastern and Midwestern United States. |
Sun Belt | a mild climate region in the southern and southwestern portions of the United States. |
Megalopolis | a large population concentration that is made up of several large and many smaller cities, such as the area between Boston and Washington, D.C. |
Jazz | musical form that developed in the United States in the early 1900’s blending African rhythms and European harmonies. |
Post Industrial | economy that emphasizes services and technology rather than industry and manufacturing. |
Fore closure | legal proceeding in which a borrower’s rights to property are relinquished due to his or her inability to make payments to the loan. |
Clear Cutting | the removal of all trees in a stand of timber |
Acid Rain | precipitation carrying large amounts of dissolved acids which kills wildlife and damages buildings, forests and crops. |
Smog | haze caused by the interaction of ultraviolet solar and radiation with chemical fumes from automobile exhausts and other pollution sources |
Eutrophication | process by which a body of water becomes too rich in dissolved nutrients, leading to plant growth that depletes oxygen. |
Aqueduct | a channel or pipeline for carrying large quantity of flowing water. |
Population | is a distinct group of individuals, whether that group makes up a nation or a group of people with a common characteristic |
Population Distribution | is a term that is used to describe how people are spread across a specific area |
Population Density | is the concentration of individuals within a species in a specific geographic location. |
Ecumene | is a term used by geographers to mean inhabited land. It generally refers to land where people have made their permanent home |
Arithmetic population density | is a statistic that tells you how many people live in a certain area, and is reported as the total number of people per land area |
Physiological population density | is the total population in proportion to the area of arable land. |
Agricultural density | measures the number of farmers specifically on each unit of farmland |
