Wave properties and sound vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Harmonic Motion | Motion that repeats over and over again. |
| Cycle | Something describing a motion that repeats over and over again. Ex: Swing |
| Pendulums | An object that swings back and forth due to the force of gravity. |
| Oscillator | A physical system that has repeating cycles. |
| Restoring Force | Any force that always acts to pull back a system toward equilibrium. |
| Period Frequency | The time it takes one cycle to occur. |
| Hertz | The unit for one cycle per second. |
| Amplitude | Describes the size of a cycle. |
| Natural Frequency | The frequency at which a system naturally oscillates. |
| Wave | An oscillation that travels from one place to another. |
| Wave Length | The distance from any point on a wave to the same point on the next cycle of the wave. |
| Transverse | Not in the direction waves move. |
| Longitudinal | Waves are in the same direction that the waves move. |
| Reflection | When a wave bounces off an object. |
| Refraction | Occurs when a wave bends as it crosses a boundary. |
| Constructive Interference | When waves add up to make a larger amplitude. |
| Destructive Interference | Waves add up to make a wave with smaller or zero amplitude. |
| decibel | unit for loudness |
| super sonic | describes traveling faster than the speed of sound |
| pitch | increased when frequency is increased |
| Doppler Effect | when frequency shifts due to motion (i.e. an ambulances siren) |
