| Wave | any disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space |
| Medium | the matter through which a wave can travel (can be solid, liquid, or gas) |
| Transverse Wave | waves that travel in an up and down motion (example: light waves) |
| Longitudinal Wave | waves that travel in back and forth in compressional pulses (example: sound waves) |
| Mechanical Waves | waves that need a medium to travel (example: sounds waves & earthquake waves) |
| Electromagnetic Waves | waves that do not need a medium to travel (example: light waves, x-rays, microwaves) |
| Amplitude | wave height |
| Wavelength | distance between 2 crests OR 2 troughs |
| Frequency | the number of waves that pass by a point each second |
| crest | highest point, or peak, of a transverse wave |

| rarefaction | where particles are spread apart in a longitudinal wave |
| compression | where particles are bunched together in a longitudinal wave |
