Diabetes Mellitus a metabolic disease, involving inappropriately elevated blood glucose levels
Type 1 Diabetes a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which destruction of pancreatic β-cells causes insulin deficiency which leads to hyperglycemia and a tendency to ketoacidosis
Type 2 Diabetes a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high
Gestational Diabetes a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy
Hyperglycemia blood glucose greater than 125 mg/dL while fasting and greater than 180 mg/dL 2 hours postprandial
Hypoglycemia a condition in which your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than the standard range
Autoimmune Disorder occurs when a person's immune system mistakenly attacks their own body tissues
Organic Macromolecules / Biomolecules A large, organic molecule such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
Carbohydrates sugar molecules
Proteins large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body
Lipids fatty compounds that perform a variety of functions in your body
Nucleic Acids large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses
Insulin a polypeptide hormone mainly secreted by β cells in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas
Glucose the main type of sugar in the blood and is the major source of energy for the body's cells
Glucagon a hormone that raises blood sugar (glucose)
Negative Feedback Loop a normal biological response in which the effects of a reaction slow or stop that reaction
Positive Feedback Loop a change in a given direction causes additional change in the same direction
Blood Glucose Meter (Glucometer) a small, portable machine that's used to measure how much glucose (a type of sugar) is in the blood
Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) using a device to automatically estimate your blood glucose level, also called blood sugar, throughout the day and night
Insulin Pump a small device that delivers insulin through a small plastic tube (catheter)
Pancreas an organ of the digestive system and of the endocrine system
Alpha Cell endocrine cells that are found in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas
Beta Cells cells that make insulin, a hormone that controls the level of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood
