Telemedicine / Telehealth | lets your health care provider care for you without an in-person office visit |
Hormones | your body's chemical messengers |
Metabolism | all the chemical processes going on continuously inside your body that allow life and normal functioning |
Cellular Respiration Equation | C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O |
Reactant(s) | a substance that enters into and is altered in the course of a chemical reaction |
Product(s) | drug, device, biological product, or product that is a combination of drugs |
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) | the source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level |
Diabetes Mellitus | a metabolic disease, involving inappropriately elevated blood glucose levels |
Type 1 Diabetes | a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which destruction of pancreatic β-cells causes insulin deficiency which leads to hyperglycemia and a tendency to ketoacidosis |
Type 2 Diabetes | a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high |
Gestational Diabetes | a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy |
Hyperglycemia | blood glucose greater than 125 mg/dL while fasting and greater than 180 mg/dL 2 hours postprandial |
Hypoglycemia | a condition in which your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than the standard range |
Autoimmune Disorder | occurs when a person's immune system mistakenly attacks their own body tissues |
Organic Macromolecules / Biomolecules | A large, organic molecule such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids |
Carbohydrates | sugar molecules |
Proteins | large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body |
Lipids | fatty compounds that perform a variety of functions in your body |
Nucleic Acids | large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses |
Insulin | a polypeptide hormone mainly secreted by β cells in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas |
Glucose | the main type of sugar in the blood and is the major source of energy for the body's cells |
Glucagon | a hormone that raises blood sugar (glucose) |
Negative Feedback Loop | a normal biological response in which the effects of a reaction slow or stop that reaction |
Positive Feedback Loop | a change in a given direction causes additional change in the same direction |
Blood Glucose Meter (Glucometer) | a small, portable machine that's used to measure how much glucose (a type of sugar) is in the blood |
Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) | using a device to automatically estimate your blood glucose level, also called blood sugar, throughout the day and night |
Insulin Pump | a small device that delivers insulin through a small plastic tube (catheter) |
Pancreas | an organ of the digestive system and of the endocrine system |
Alpha Cell | endocrine cells that are found in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas |
Beta Cells | cells that make insulin, a hormone that controls the level of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood |
