TermDefinition
meditation a systematic narrowing of attention that slows the metabolism and helps produce feelings of relaxation
biofeedback a system for monitoring and feeding back information about certain biological processes, such as blood pressure
hypnosis a calm, trance-like state during which you tend to have heightened concentration and focus, and in which you're typically more open to suggestion
posthypnotic suggestion instructions given to a person under hypnosis that are supposed to be carried out after the hypnosis session has ended
addiction a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance
depressants a drug that reduces neural activity and slows body functions
intoxication a state of drunkenness characterized by impaired coordination and judgement
narcotics a type of drug that dulls the senses, relieves pain, and induces sleep; the term is usually reserved for those drugs derived from the opium poppy plant
stimulant a drug that increases neural activity and speeds up body functions
amphetamine a type of stimulant often used to stay awake or to reduce appetite
hallucination a false sensory perception that occurs in the absence of any actual stimulus
delusion an erroneous belief, as of persecution or grandeur, that may accompany certain psychotic disorders
hallucinogen a psychedelic drug, such as LSD, that distorts perception and evokes sensory images in the absences of actual sensory input
detoxification the removal of a poisonous or otherwise harmful substance, such as alcohol or other drugs, from the body
tolerance the diminishing effect with regular use of the same dose of a drug, requiring the user to take larger and larger doses before experiencing the drug's effects
psychoactive drugs chemical substances that alter your mood and perception
disinhibitor impairs your brain's judgement areas, while reducing your self-awareness and self-control
