Thermal Energy Vocabulary

| open system | a material system in which mass or energy can be lost to or gained from the environment |
| closed system | a material system in which mass or energy cannot be lost or gained from the environment |
| mean | the average of the given set of values |
| molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound |
| control variable | any factor that is controlled or held constant during an experiment |
| condensation | the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid |
| evaporation | the conversion of a liquid to water vapor |
| kinetic energy | the amount of energy an object has when it is in motion |
| potential energy | the amount of energy within an object when at rest |
| temperature | the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch |
| thermal energy | the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature |
| heat | the quality of being hot; high temperature |
| absorption | the process or action by which one thing absorbs or is absorbed by another |
| conduction | the process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through a substance |
| styrene/styrofoam | A hydrocarbon petroleum byproduct used to make plastics and resins |
| porous | having minute spaces or holes through which liquid or air may pass |
| vacuum-insulated | a form of thermal insulation consisting of a gas-tight enclosure surrounding a rigid core, from which the air has been evacuated |
