Influences on perception

TermDefinition
Perceptual set A set of mental tendencies and assumptions that affects top-down, what we hear/feel/taste
Determines Perceptual set Through experiences/ Concepts/ Organize/ interprets unfamiliar information
Context Affects interpretation by where we stand in the situation or what side we are on
Context example When your driving you hate pedestrians/ When your walking you hate drivers
Motivations Affects interpretation because it gives us energy toward a goal and it can bias our interpretations of neural stimuli
Motivation examples Desirable objects - Water bottles viewed by a thirsty person seems closer than they are. This perceptual bias energizes going for it
Emotion Affects our interpretation because emotions can push our perceptions in one direction or another
Emotions Example When angry, people more often perceive neutral objects as guns
Extrasensory perception It claims that perception can occur apart from sensory input. Are there people who can read minds? See through walls? Or foretell the future? Nearly half of Americans think there are.
Parapsychology Researchers perform scientific experiments searching for possible (ESP) phenomena
