Research methods

Psychology AS - Research methods key words

TermDefinition
Qualitative Observation based and focus more on words than numbers. E.g. everyone gives a description of how they feel
Quantitative Consists of numbers and facts. It can be measured. E.g. everyone rates how they feel on a scale of 1-10
Primary data Research that you carry out yourself. You do every part of the research
Secondary data Research that has been done by someone else that you then use for your own research, you find this information on google or in books etc…
Dependent Variable Something that changes due to the independent variable. The dependent variable is what is being measured in an experiment
Independent Variable This is what you change in an experiment
Confounding Variable Something that could only affect a few of the participants in an experiment but not all. E.g. the language used, home life or sensitivity to the equipment being used
Extraneous Variable Something that could have an effect on everyone during the experiment. E.g. time of day, heat or noise
Operationalisation of variables Defining variables into measurable factors
