| Sound Devices | Words used to create images while making interesting sound patterns. |
| Assonance | The repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds. |
| Consonance | The repetition of the same consonant sounds within words in a line of poetry. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words whose sounds suggest their meaning. |
| Figurative Language | Imaginative way of using comparisons to create fresh new images. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things without using the words "like" or "as." |
| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as". |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics to an object or animal. |
| Hyperbole | Dramatic and obvious exaggeration to create humor or to emphasize an idea. |
| End Rhyme | Rhyming words at the end of lines of poetry |
| Internal Rhyme | Rhyming words within a line of poetry. |
| Imagery | The use of language to evoke a picture in the mind. |
| Symbolism | A person, place, or thing that has meaning in itself and that also stands for something more than itself. |
| Parallel Structure | The repetition of similar or identical grammatical structures to emphasize an idea. |
| Free Verse | Poetry that does not conform to a regular meter or rhyme scheme(natural rhythm of spoke language). |
| Allusion | A reference to someone or something well-known from history, literature, religion, politics, etc. |
