worddefinition
deformation : a change of shape in any structural component or in the structure itself b/c the material is unable to resist the force acting on it ex: the shape of an empty can
flexiblity: the ability of a material to be bent under force repeatedly and not fail for example a foem cushion has flexibility
friction: the use or purpose of a structure ex: the function of a thermos is to keep a drink cool on hot day.
column: solid upright support structure in the shape of a cylinder
structural stress: effectof all the forces acting on a structure at one time
structural fatigue: weakening of a structure due to the exturnal and internal forces acting on it
structural failure: Breakdown of a structure do to the external and internal forces acting on it 4 ex. Collapse of a bridge.
Cantilever: Strucure that is supported at only one end or point 4 ex. as found in a cantilever bridge such as stony trail bridge.
Truss: Frame work of beams that form triangles for ex. your force pulling an elastic.
Girders: Long structure in a form of a hollow rectangular prism.
I beam: A beam that has a cross section in a shape of an I for ex. Some types of curtian rod.
Beam: Flat structure Supported at both ends.
