Atmosphere & Weather
UNIT 2; Atmosphere and Weather
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diurnal | daily, the 24hr period of day and night |
| Shortwave Solar radiation | the visible light and UV energy radiating from the sun to the earth -simple energy from the sun |
| Reflected Solar Radiation | the fraction of solar radiation that is reflected by the earths surface |
| Albedo | the percentage of solar energy striking the surface of the earth that is reflected away from the earth |
| Sensible Heat | heat that we can feel, it can be measured by a thermometer |
| Longwave Radiation(Terrestrial Radiation) | the infrared energy radiating from the earth into space |
| Latent Heat | hidden heat, the energy released when a material changes state. it measures the internal energy/temp that is hidden from a thermometer(temp reading doesn't change) |
| Wind Belt | Wind flows from ares of high pressure to cold pressure because of heat and movement of the earth |
| Ocean Current | the continuous, predictable, directional movement of seawater driven by gravity, wind, and water density |
| Latitude | the distance north or south (from) of the equator |
| Condensation | the process by which cooling water vapor turns into a liquid |
| Sublimation | a substance changing directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the intermediate liquid phase |
| Greenhouse Effect | when carbon dioxide is stoped fro being released into the atmosphere, instead it is absorbed back into the earth causing temperatures to rise |
| Global Warming | A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earths atmosphere, attributing to the greenhouse effect |
| Maritime Climate | this is a place where the land is affected by the proximity of an ocean, lowering the temperature of the area during the summer, and keeping the area warmer in the winter |
| Continental Climate | inland areas/places where seasons occur annually where the land in unaffected by maritime climate |
| Absolute Humidity | this is the water content of air expressed by grams per cubic meter |
| Relative Humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air expressed as a percentage compared to how much it could hold at the specific temperature |
| Dew Point | the temperature at which the atmosphere being cool, becomes saturated with water vapor, this water vapor is then deposited as drops of dew |
| Rainshadow | The relatively dry area on the leeward side of high ground in the path of rain bearing winds |
| Mid Latitude Depressions | weather systems that result from frontal rain in mid latitudes, warm air coming up from the tropics meets cold air from the poles |
| Kyoto Protocal | an international treaty, allowing a branch of the UN (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) to extend the world climate change to reduce green house gas emissions by 2012 |
| Doha Amendment | and amendment made to the Kyoto Protocal adopted by Doha Qatar, committing signitory nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 |
| Convection | air is heated from the ground, the becomes less dense, and then rises |
| Frontal | warm air meets cold air and the lighter warm air is forced up over the cold at a line called the front |
| Orographic Uplift of Air | Air being forced up a mountain resulting in precipitation |
