Science vocabulary 2

unit 2 vocab

TermDefinition
Lesson 1: Matter Definition:Anything that has Mass and takes up space
Mass Definition: A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight Definition: A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object in the universe.
Volume Definition: The amount of space that an object takes up or occupies
Density Definition: The ration of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance
Lesson 2: Physical Property Definition: A characteristic of substance that can be observed & measured without changing identity's substance
Chemical Property Definition: A property that defines a substances ability to form a new substance
Lesson 3: Physical Change Definition: A change of matter from 1 form to another without a change in chemical properties
Chemical Change Definition: A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties.
Law of Conservation of Mass Definition: The law that states the mass can not be created or destroyed in ordinary and physical and chemical changes.
Lesson 4: Solid Definition: Strong forces of attraction holds particles together in a fixed position, - Highest density
Liquid Definition: Weak forces of attraction between particles hold them together but not in a fixed position, - Lower density
Gas Definition: The force of attraction between particles is very weak so they are free to move around, - Lowest density
Lesson 5: Atom Definition: The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
Element Definition: Are broadly classified as metals, nonmetals, or metalloids.
Compound Definition: Like water are pure substances because every molecule is identical
Mixture Definition: A combination of 2 or more substances that have been combined physically.
Pure substances Definition: Made up of one type of particle
Heterogeneous Definition: Does not have a uniform composition
Homogenous Definition: Has a uniform Composition
Lesson 6: Electron Definition:Has a negative charge
Nucleus Definition: Atoms central region which is made up of protons & neutrons.
Proton Definition: A subatomic particle that has a positive charge located in the nucleus. The number of protons is the atomic numbers which determines the identity of an element.
Neutron Definition: Has no charge and is located in the nucleus of an atom
Electron Cloud Definition: A region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are likely to be found
Atomic number Definition: The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the atomic number is the same for all atoms an element.
Mass Number Definition: The sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Lesson 7: Periodic Table Definition: An arrangement of the elements in the order of their atomic numbers such that elements with similar properties fall in the same column or group
Chemical Symbol Definition: A 1- 2- 3- letter abbreviation of the name of an element
Average atomic mass Definition: The weighted average of the masses of all naturally occurring isotopes of an element
Metal Definition: Conduct heal & electricity well An element that is shiny
Nonmetal Definition: An element that conducts heat and electricity poorly
Metaloid Definition: Have same properties of metals and some of nonmetals
Group Definition: A group is also known as a family (vertical Column)
Period Definition: ( Horizontal Row) Element in a period do not have similar properties

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
