Force and Motion
vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
force | push or a pull |
Newton | unit of measurement for force |
friction | force that opposes motion between surfaces that are touching |
speed | the rate at which an object moves or changes it's position |
velocity | speed with a direction |
distance | the length between 2 points |
acceleration | rate at which velocity changes |
meter | unit for distance |
m/s or km/h | unit for speed (meters per second or kilometers per hour |
examples of directions | North, South, up, over, down, left, towards the road |
types of friction | rolling, fluid, static, sliding |
net force | the force that results from combining all forces acting on an object (left over force) |
unbalanced force | force resulting in motion; when the net force is greater than zero. |
balanced force | forces that cancel each other out resulting a net force equal to zero (no motion occurs) |
constant acceleration | motion where speed increases by the same amount each second |
