behavior genetics | the study of the relative effects of genes and environment on our behavior |
genes | the biochemical unit of heredity that make up the chromosomes |
environment | Every nongenetic influence, from prenatal nutrition to the people and things around us |
chromosomes | Threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain the genes. |
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) | A complex molecule containing the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes |
mutation | Random errors in the gene replication that lead to a change in the individuals genetic code; that source of all genetic diversity. |
identical twins | Twins who develop from a single fertilized egg that splits in two, creating two genetically identical organisms |
fraternal twins | Twins who develop from two different fertilized eggs; they are genetically no more similar than any other two siblings, but they share a fetal environment |
heritability | the degree to which traits are inherited |
culture | The shared attitudes, beliefs, norms and behaviors of a group communicated from one generation to the next |
norms | Understood rules for accepted and expected behavior |
individualism | Cultural style that places personal goals or needs ahead of group goals or needs |
collectivism | Cultural style that places group goals or needs ahead of of personal goals or needs. |
