The Biology of Consciousness

TermDefinition
Two-track mind Dual Processing (Information is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tracks)
Blindsight A condition in which a person can respond to stimuli without consciously processing it
Parallel Processing unconscious processing of many aspects of a problem simultaneously (Right hemisphere)
Sequential Processing Conscious processing of one aspect of a problem at a time (Left hemisphere)
Example of sequential processing Learning how to parallel park -Drive past spot -Turn wheel away from curb -Back up into spot -Turn the wheel back to straighten
Example of parallel processing What color is it? How big is it? What animal is it? How far away is it? What do I need to do? How do I get my body to do it?
Supports growth (Importance of sleep) pituitary gland releases human growth hormone during slow-wave sleep
Evolutionarily protective (Importance of sleep) Protected from harm if you are sleeping when it’s dark → this has been passed down
Recuperation (Importance of sleep) Sleep helps restore the immune system/ Weakened neurons are pruned /Neurons rest
Consolidates memories (Importance of Sleep) ) Replays recent learning and strengthens neural connections.
Importance of Sleep Feeds creativity
Circadian Rhythm -The way our bodies roughly synchronize with the 24 hour day -Later in adolescents
Sleep & Age More frequent awakenings in older adults/ Later circadian rhythm in adolescents/ Infants spend the most time in REM (dreaming) sleep
NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep
NREM-1 Brief/ Hypnagogic sensations: Feel like you are falling /Brain “powering down”
NREM-2 20 minutes/ “Sleep spindles” on EEG /Can still be awakened without much difficulty
NREM-3 slow-wave sleep/ lasts for about 30 minutes /brain emits large, slow delta waves and you are hard to awaken.
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep Dreams/ paradoxical sleep: because the muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active./ Increases as night progresses
We cycle through the stages like a rollercoaster all night REM-1-2-3-2-1-REM
Consequences of Sleep Loss Greater interpersonal conflict/ Reduced immune response/ Higher levels of depression/anxiety/ Increased appetite/ desire for simple carbohydrates/ Shorter lifespan
