QuestionAnswer
chemical formula a notation indicating the elements in a compound & the ratios of the atoms of each element
reactants substances that undergo a chemical change
products new substances formed as a result of a chemical cahnge
chemical equation the way scientists summarize a chemical change; a representation of a chemical reaction using chemical formulas for the reactants and the products
coefficients #s that appear before a formula in a chemical equation to show how many atoms or molecules of each reactant or product are involved in the reaction
A chemical equation must be balanced to show that mass is conserved during a reaction.
When balancing equations, you must never change a subscript in the formula.
The only way to adjust the number of atoms of molecules is to use coefficients.
The most stable electron configuration for atoms is when their highest energy level has a full set of electrons.
chemical bond a force of attraction between atoms or groups of atoms
ion an atom or a group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge
cation a positive ion, an atom with a positive charge; named by simply using the element name followed by the word ion, such as sodium ion
anion a negative ion, an atom with a negative charge; named using the first part of the element name plus -ide.
The formation of ions requires the TRANSFER of electrons between atoms.
ionic bond a chemical bond formed between oppositely charged ions
Ionic compounds are formed between cations and anions.
electron dot diagram a model of the atom in which each dot represents a valence electron
covalent bonds a chemical bond in which two atoms SHARE one or more pairs of valence electrons
Covalent bonds form between atoms of nonmetals when they share valence electrons.
Groups 1A, 2A, 3A, and 7A transfer electrons to form ionic bonds and make ionic compounds.
Groups 4A, 5A, and 6A tend to share electrons with other atoms.
Shared electrons travel around both nuclei.
double bond when 2 atoms share 2 pairs of electrons
triple bond when 3 pairs of electrons are shared
Elements on the right side of the periodic table generally have a greater attraction for electrons than elements on the left side.
Elements at the top of the group generally have a greater attraction for electrons than the elements at the bottom of a group.
polar covalent bond a covalent bond in which the electrons are not shared equally
polar molecule a molecule that has slight positive and negative charges due to an imbalance in the way electrons are shared
linear shape when atoms form a straight line in their molecule
polarity having opposite charges within the same substance
nonpolar molecule when the pull on electrons is equal from both sides and they cancel each other out
All polar compounds will contain polar bonds, but not all compounds that contain polar bonds are polar compounds.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
