What is a wave? A disturbance that transmits energy
What are water waves? Disturbances that transmit energy
What are sound waves? Vibrations traveling in waves
How do musical instruments make sound? By vibrating the molecules of the air
What causes sound vibrations? The back-and-forth movements of an object
How do compression waves move? By pushing molecules together and then spreading them apart
How does your brain interpret sound? By detecting vibrations in your ears
What are two ways to measure sound? Pitch and volume
What is pitch? The highness or lowness of a sound
What produces high-pitched sounds? A flute
What is volume? The loudness of a sound
What is the softest sound that humans can hear? 0 dB
How long can a person listen to noise at 100 decibels without ear protection? 15 minutes
