Heredity The genetic transfer of characteristics from parent to offspring (46 chromosomes containing DNA)
Genes Segments of DNA
Monozygotic (Identical) Twins -Single egg splits in two -Genetically identical
Dizygotic (Fraternal) twins -2 eggs released -No more genetic similarity than siblings
Identical twin studies reveal much about the influence of nature vs nurture
Identical twins reared apart -Same nature, different nurture -Show similar fears, tastes, abilities, & interests, incidence of psychological disorders
Heritability -Variation among individuals in a group that we can attribute to genes -Similarity in environment increases heritability
Epigenetics The study of environmental influences on gene expression Example: Development of cancer for a smoker vs. non-smokers with risky genes
