Significant Planning Acts

TermDefinition
Telecommunications Act of 1996 Federal legislation deregulating the communications industry & 1st significant federal legislation to address issues associated with the internet. The act is considered the foundation for expanding broadband communications across the United States.
Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) This act established protections for religious organizations against potentially discriminatory land use regulations.
Endangered Species Act The main federal legislation governing critical plant and animal habitats. Federal agencies are not allowed to permit any action that causes harm to a species on the threatened or endangered list.
National Environmental Policy Act This act created a broad environmental policy framework for the US & is considered to be a landmark pieces of legislation in the 20th century and the first major US environmental law. It was passed in 1969 and went into effect on January 1, 1970.
Clean Air Act The Clean Air Act followed the National Environmental Policy Act and preceded the Clean Water Act. The Clean Air Act mandated the Environmental Protection Agency to create National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
Clean Water Act The US's 1st water pollution legislation passed in 1948 as the Federal Water Pollution Control Act & was revamped &expanded in 1972 to become what's commonly called the Clean Water Act.
Freedom of Information Act this law requires disclosure of previously unreleased information to an individual or organization submitting a formal request
Coastal Zone Management Act This act, administered by NOAA, provides for the management of the nation's coastal resources(including Great Lakes). The goal is to "preserve, protect, develop, and where possible, to resource or enhance the resources of the nation's coastal zone." 1972
