QuestionAnswer
Location, structure & function of the brain • It is responsible for how we think, feel and how we perceive and react to our world around us. It enables us to make decisions solve problems fall in love etc 100 billion neurons, more than 90% of cns neurons
• Has an important role in communicating information to the rest of the body. 1.It receives and interprets information received from the bodys sensory systems 2.It then forms a response to it 3.And then sends motor messages out to all parts of the body so that the coordinated and appropriate response can be made ~ controls all
hindbrain/ brainstem • Located at the base of the brain near the back of the skull - the lower brain • It is important for movement and balance
o Medulla - hindbrain  It is the continuation of the spine and it controls breathing, heartbeat and forebrain
o Cerebellum - hindbrain  Is a walnut shaped area that receives information from the pons. Its role is to coordinate the sequence of body movements
Midbrain responsible for the regulation of sleep, motor movement and arousal It includes the reticular formation (a network of neurons belonging to the hindbrain and forebrain) and it is important in the control of arousal and in the sleeping and waking cycle
Forebrain The largest most complex and highly developed region of the brain It controls the higher cognitive functions and processes such as emotions, motivations, sensations, perceptions, learning memory and reasoning. contais cerebrum
o Hypothalamus - forebrain  A small structure that controls basic survival actions such as sleep, regulation of body temperature, expression of emotions and the four “F’s” - feeding, fighting, fleeing and fornification
o Thalamus - forebrain  Located deep within the cerebral hemispheres. It is the ‘commiunication centre’ of the brain and it receives information from the ears, eyes, skin and other sensory organs except for the nose. It also regulates the overall activity in the cortex.
o Thalamus - forebrain 2 It enables us to process sensory stimuli in the environment and determines which sensory information we should pay attention to.
• Frontal lobe o Are associated with higher mental ability and control movement. If they are damaged then a persons personality may change drastically and they may not be able to problem solve or reason
o parietal lobe  Are located at the top of the cortex and are responsible for bodily sensations such as temperature and touch. Damage to this area leads to a reduction in bodily feelings
• temporal lobe o Located on either side of the cortex. They are associated with speech and hearing. Damage affects the persons language ability
• Occipital lobes o Are at the back of the brain and are responsible for vision. Damage to this area affects vision
