Magnetism
Middle School Magnetism Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Magnets | a piece of metal with a strong attraction to another metal object. |
| Magnetic Poles | the region at each end of a magnet where the magnetic field is the strongest |
| Magnetic Field | a region around a magnet in which the effect of magnetism is felt |
| Magnetic Force | a force that a magnet exerts on other magnets and magnetic material |
| Like Magnetic Poles | Repel |
| Opposite Magnetic Poles | Attract |
| Magnetosphere | the region of space surrounding Earth where it's magnetic field extends. |
| Electromagnetism | magnetism produced by an electric current |
| Electromagnet | A coil of wires with a current running through it around a ferromagnetic coil that can be turned on and off. |
| Electric Current | the flow of electrons through a closed circuit |
| Insulator | a material that resists the flow of electrons |
| Conductor | a material through which electrons can flow freely |
| Solenoid | a coil of wires in a circuit which produce a magnetic field so it acts as a weak bar magnet |
| The number of coils | makes an electromagnet and solenoid stronger |
| Larger current | produces a stronger magnetic field |
| Simple Motor | converts electrical energy into mechanical energy |
| Generator | converts mechanical energy into electrical energy |
