Drug classifications

TermDefinition
Benzodiazepine CNS depressing agents with the potential for abuse and/depression.
Beta Blockers Expands the bronchial passages; for treatment of asthma.
Calcium Channel Blockers Blocks the flow of calcium ions in the heart for treatment of angina pectoris, arrhythmia, and hypertension.
Cardiac Glycoside Used to treat mild to moderate heart failure.
Cephalosporin Inhibits cell wall formation in bacteria (cell wall synthesis).
Corticosteroid Hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex that regulate the body's ability to handle stress, resist infections, affect glucose, fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism and maintain salt and water balance.
Decongestant Used to cause mucous membrane vasoconstriction, reduction of nasal passage drainage, and relief of stuffiness.
Diuretic Increases production of urine.
Emetic Causes vomiting.
Expectorants increases the production of respiratory secretions and decreases irritation caused by dryness in the airways.
Fluoroquinolone Inhibits DNA coiling & replication in bacteria causing DNA breakage & cell death.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Agents Used to treat disorders of the stomach and/or intestines i.e., ulcer, reflux, etc.
GI stimulant Used to increase the speed of gastric emptying & reduce esophageal sphincter pressure.
GLP-Agonist (Glucagon-like peptide -1) This type of drug is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
H1 Antagonist (Blocker) Blocks the action of histamine at the H1 receptor; relieves from allergic reaction. Effects respiratory system.
H2 Antihistamine Affects the cells of the gastrointestinal tract.
