| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| one way mirror | a piece of glass that is a mirror on one side but that can be seen through like a window on the other side |
| scale model | small but exact copy of something |
| light source | anything that makes light whether natural and artificial |
| reflect | bounces off |
| transmit | goes through |
| independent variable | variable that is changed |
| dependent variable | variable affected by the change |
| experimental question | questions that are answered by conducting tests and collecting evidence about a phenomenon or problem |
| silvering | silver-colored material used to coat glass in order to make it reflective |
| transparent | a material that allows light to pass through so that objects behind can be seen |
| opaque | a material that does not allow light to pass though, not transparent |
| model | representation we use to understand or describe phenomenon |
| retina | the layer of cells lining the back wall inside the eye. This layer senses light and changes them into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. |
| optic nerve | structure that carries electrical signals to the brain where they are processed it into what we see |
| refract | when light passes through a material that causes in to change direction or bends |
| scattering | a change in the direction of motion of a particle because of a collision with another particle |
| specular reflection | the mirror-like reflection of waves, such as light, from a surface |
| system | a set of parts that work together (intersect) toward a goal or outcome. It's helpful to set a boundary to study things inside the system and effects from outside the system. |
| visible light | the only wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see |
| brightness | a measure of the amount of light reflected by a material |
| light waves | one of the ways that energy travels though space (electromagnetic radiation) |
| mirror | a reflective surface that reflects a clear image |
| prism | a piece of glass that can separate white light |
| sense receptor | an organ that has nerve endings that respond to stimulation |
