| Biotic | A living thing that affects the ecosystem. |
| Abiotic | A nonliving thing that affects the ecosystem. |
| Short-term Environmental Changes | environmental change that occurs quickly and affects organisms immediately. |
| Long-term Environmental Changes | Environmental change that occurs slowly over time and affects organisms over generations. |
| Investigate | To gather information about a certain thing. |
| Explore | Inquire into or discuss (a subject or issue) in detail. "he sets out to explore fundamental questions" |
| Ecosystem | A system comprising all the biotic and abiotic factors in an area and all the interactions among them. |
| Biodiversity | The sum of the different forms of living things in a given area or population. |
| Population | A group of interacting individuals of the same species located in the same area |
| Dependence | When an organism depends on a factor for survival. |
| Primary Succession | The development of an ecological community in a previously uninhabited location. |
| Secondary Succession | The development of an ecological community in an area that was once inhabited but experienced devastation |
