Perspectives

from the summer work !!!

TermDefinition
PsychodynamicPerspective Relies on how the past affects humans' psychological state. Believe that the unconscious mind controls most of our behavior. Goal states that in order to overcome something, the human has to understand what happened in the past that changed their actions
Humanist Perspective Based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: to reach your full potential you must reach all 5 needs. 1. Physiological, 2. safety, 3. love and belonging, 4. esteem, 5. self actualization. Says humans are in control of their behaviors and emotions.
Evolutionary Perspective Suggests mental processes exist because they provide evolutionary purposes. Believes humans think and act a way only for survival and reproduction purposes. APPLY EVOLUTION PRINCIPALS (natural selection) TO PSYCH PHENOMENAS.
Sociocultural Perspective Studies how individuals' culture influences how they act and respond. Combines social and cultural factors to study and understand behavior related to one's culture. Goal is to explain human behavior across different cultures from a different POV.
Cognitive Perspective Focuses on mental processes like memory, decision making, and problem solving. Explains how info is acquired, processed and used. Based around the idea that in order to understand someone's behavior, you must know how they process the world around them.
Behavioral Perspective Looks into environmental stimuli that determines behavior. States behavior is learned by experiences. "Behavior can be taught through proper conditioning" and "genetic talents are not passed down but rather taught through generations".
Biological Perspective Looks into the brain, immune system, nervous system, and genetics. Nature VS Nurture stems from this approach. This perspective sides with Nature. (Nurture thinks the environment plays biggest role in learning behaviors). Supported by Charles Darwin!
