Elements of a Story

TermDefinition
Conflict A problem a character faces throughout the story
Plot The sequence of events in a story
Exposition/Introduction The beginning of a story where the main characters, setting, and initial conflicts are introduced
Rising Action Events that create tension and suspense while leading up to the climax
Climax The turning point of the story where the main conflict is addressed
Falling Action Eases the tension and shows how the main character resolves the conflict
Resolution/Conolusion The end of the story where typically action has relaxed, and most conflicts are resolved.
