| Science Vocabulary Word | Definition |
|---|---|
| kinetic energy | Energy an object has due to motion. |
| Joules | The SI unit of work, energy, KE, & PE. |
| acceleration | A "speeding up" in speed or rate. |
| deceleration | A reduction "slowing down" in speed or rate. |
| velocity | The speed and direction of an object. |
| mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
| motion energy | The energy of an object in motion. Related to kinetic energy. |
| thermometer | Tool used to measure the temperature of an object. |
| speed | The distance an object travels per unit time. Example (60 miles/hour) |
| proportional | A relationship or comparison between two numbers or variables. |
| mechanical energy | The energy of an object due to its motion and its position. |
| Sound energy | The energy we can hear and moves through the air and other objects in the form of waves. |
| Light energy | Energy in the form of ultraviolent rays. Is also known as radiant energy. |
| Heat energy | Also callled thermal energy and is due to the movement of molecules. This kind of energy can be transferred from one object to another. |
| Potential energy | Energy that is stored in an obect due to its position. |
| Height | The distance between the base (bottom) of an object to it top. |
| Gravity | The force of attraction between two objects. |
| Elastic potential energy | The energy of stretched "pull apart" or compressed "push together " objects such as a rubber band or spring. |
| Gravitational potential energy | The energy that depends on the position of an object and gravity. |
| Chemical energy | A form of potential energy that is stored in bonds between atoms and is found in food, batteries, & fossil fuels. |
| Stationary object | An object that is not moving. |
| Work | The use of force to move an object over a distance. |
| The Law of Conservation of Energy | States energy can not be created nor destroyed; it can only change forms. |
| Force | A push or pull. |
| Weight | The measure of the force of gravity on an object. |
| Electrical energy | Energy in the form of moving charges. |
| energy | Is the ability to do work and it exists in many different forms. |
| Energy transformation | The process of changing one form of energy into another. Also called energy conversion. |
