Unit One

Physical Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
dense a substance that has more matter is more dense a substance that has less matter is less dense
relative density floating or sinking when compared to water
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance, such as sugar dissolving in water
soluble able to dissolve in water
physical state The classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas
conductor a substance or object that allows electrical or thermal energy to flow through it easily
dissolve solid breaks down in water and forms a solution
electric energy energy that is absorbed or delivered by an electric circuit
electricity a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles
insulator a substance or object that does not allow electrical or thermal energy to flow through it easily
magnetism an attracting or repelling force that causes a magnetic material to move. Pushing or pulling force
mass the amount of matter in something: measured in grams
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
substance particular kind of matter
thermal energy Energy that causes a transfer of heat between materials
volume The amount of space matter takes up; measured in liters (L), cubic centimeters (cm3 ), or milliliters (mL)
states of matter the forms matter can take, such as solid, liquid, and gas; sometimes called phases of matter
water vapor gas form of water
condensation vapor air (gas) turning into a liquid
cooling removing heat and decreasing temperature
evaporation adding heat and changing water (liquid) to water vapor (gas).
heating adding heating and increasing temperature
mixture a combination of two or more substances that can be easily separated in some physical way
physical property properties of matter that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing the matter itself. For example, color, melting point, and conductivity
solution a type of mixture in which the particles of one or more substances are dissolved (uniformly dispersed throughout) in another substance
dissolving the process of forming a mixture of a substance broken down into small pieces and spread evenly throughout a liquid (water)
solid a state of matter in which the substance has a set shape and size
liquid a state of matter in which the substance takes the shape of the container and has an unchanged volume when poured from one container to another
gas a state of matter in which the substance expands to take both the shape and the volume of its container
melting the process of changing a substance from a solid to a liquid by adding thermal energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
