Earth & Map Skills

TermDefinition
Solar energy Energy from the sun.
Rotation One complete spin of Earth on its axis
Revolution One trip of Earth around the sun.
Latitude The distance north or south of Earth's equator ,imaginary lines that circle Earth from east to west.
Tropics Regions close to the equator
Longitude Distance east or west of the Earth's prime meridian,imaginary lines that circle the Earth from north to south.
Legend (key) Tells what symbols and colors stand for
Compass rose shows cardinal directions : North,South,East,& West and intermediate directions :NE,NW,SE &,SW.
Scale Show the relationship between the distance on a map and the Earth.
Physical Map Show types of landforms and bodies of water. They use color,lines, or shading to show elevations and shading.
Political Map Shows features that humans created (Ex. cities , states, provinces, territories, or countries.
Thematic Map focus on a specific idea (Ex. population, natural resources, languages.
