TermDefinition
thesis statement A statement of the central idea in a work, may be explicit or implicit.
topic sentence A sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs.
cognition all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating
Metacognition awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes.
Heuristic a problem solving approach to find a satisfactory solution, fast and has flaws
Concept A general idea or thought about something
Prototype an original model on which later versions are patterned
Algorithm a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem, slow less flaws
Scientific Method A logical, systematic approach to the solution of a scientific problem
Correlation A measure of the relationship between two variables
Descriptive giving details about; illustrating; explaining
Experimental to explore cause and effect with a trial
wording effects when a specific word used in a question affects how respondents answer the question or the order of the questions
random sampling a method of poll selection that gives each person in a group the same chance of being selected
representative sampling A subset of a population that closely matches the overall characteristics of the population.
Population a group of organisms of the same species populating a given area
Sample a subset of the population
Experiment Data driven trial, different from a study.
treatment group the participants in an experiment who are exposed to the level of the independent variable.
control group The group that is not exposed to the independent variable, comparative to treatment group.
random assignment assigning participants to experimental and control conditions by chance
double-blind procedure an experimental procedure in which both the research participants don't know what is given to them.
Placebo effect results caused by expectations alone
independent variable variable that is manipulated
confounding variable a factor other than the independent variable that might produce an effect in an experiment
dependent variable The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to the independent variable.
Theory A hypothesis that has been tested with a significant amount of data
Hypothesis A testable prediction, often implied by a theory
falsifiable capable of being disproved
operational definition a statement of the procedures used to define research variables
Replication repeating the essence of a study
peer review a review by people with similar professional qualification
research A scientific process that involves the systematic and careful collection of data.
study not an experiment, usually involving one uncommon case
