Introduction to Tech

Introduction to Tech, I'm in 9th grade btw this might not all be correct

TermDefinition
Areas of Techincal theatre: Scenery, Props, Sound, Lighting, Makeup/Hair, Costumes, Publicity
Scenery Curtains, backdrops, or any structure that transform an empty stage
Props -stage decorations -actors for stage business and characterization -supports the setting, characterization, and add symbolism to the play
Sound -Music -Sound Effects -Singing -Reinforcement
Lighting -Allows the actors to be seen -Helps set the tone and mood -Establishes the setting
Costumes -They are clothes that actors wear in a play -They help portray the character -Help the audience understand the time and place of the story
Hair/Makeup -Helps portray the character -Supports the costume
Publicity -Box Office - ticket sales -Programs -Advertisement -Merchandise
If an actor moved to their right, where would the be going? Stage Right!
If an actor moved to their left, where would they be going? Stage Left!
If an actor was moving towards the house, where would they be going? Downstage! moving down to the audience
If an actor was moving away from the house, where would they be going? Upstage!
Stage Directions Directions on stage, always given from the actor’s perspective
Blocking -movement on stage -usually dictated by the director. Blocking is important for the actors and the techies
The types of stages Proscenium, Arena, Thrust, and Black Box/Flexible
Proscenium Stage -Also called a picture frame stage -The most common, especially in schools -Audience sits on ONE side of the stage -Utilizes standard stage directions
Arena Stage -Also called Theatre in the Round -Audience sits on FOUR side -Utilizes clock or compass stage directions
Thrust Stage -Similar to a runway -Audience sits on THREE side of the stage -Has a backstage -Uses standard stage directions
Black Box or Flexible Stage A space that can be transformed into any type of stage Black Box - a big space painted flat black
Types of Curtains 1st. Grand Drape 2nd. Traveler or Act Curtain 3rd. Traveler
Grand Drape The first main curtain, behind the proscenium arch.
Leg Curtain Thin curtains that hide the wings. Some are on a track and can curve. (like the legs, they don't move from the main body)
Teasers or Boarder Curtains -Short, horizontal curtains that mask (hide) the stage lights. -It teases the audience into thinking that there are no lights behind it. Get it...hehe
Cyc -Formally known as the Cyclorama. Rarely used anymore! -Muslin fabric curtain -Can change the color of the cyc with lighting & gels. Good for showing time of day or mood -Can project images with a projector -Usually the very last curtain
Backdrop or Drop -Fabric with a painted scenery or image that hangs in the back -Often used in musicals that have multiple fast scene changes
Scrim -Lightweight woven cotton fabric used for stage effects -Can be see-through when lit from an angle or back -Appears solid when lit from the front
Counterweight Fly System -Borrowed from sailing ship industry, majority of terminology including the term "rigging" comes from sailing ships -Allows quick scene changes in proscenium theatre -Bring in and out curtains, scenery, and lighting
Fly Rail -The loading bridge is used to add or remove counterweights from arbors -a narrow raised platform at the side of a theater stage -where you control the batons -from which flying scenery lines are operated.
Batten Metal pipes that curtains, set pieces, and lighting instruments are hung from
Wings The side the stage
Orchestra Pit A big pit for the orchestra
Booth controls lighting and/or sound
Fire Curtain An emergency curtain that drops between the audience and the stage. If there is a fire.
Prop Closet where you store your props
Scene Shop Where props and set pieces are built; usually behind or to the side of the stage
Theatre Call Board -Cast and crew get information - see if they are called to rehearsal -not used as often because of technolyg getting so common
Cat Walk -holds the lights -very high up -really small so like only a cat can walk on it lol
Flats -theatre walls -they are flat -physically light
Sight Lines -what the audiance sees -helps with blocking
Masking what you do to hide the wings
Platform creates levals
The Heavens holds stuff
The #1 Goal of Tech Theater To create the Illusion
Dead Hung the rigging does not fly, just hangs there
Periaktoi -a device used for displaying and rapidly changing theatre scenes. -THREE SIDES FLAT ON CASTERS -GREEK THEATRE
Tormentor -A hanging curtain that reduces or expands the proscenium frame (arc) -By the grand drape
Levals refers to the head height Chairs, platforms, ladders, tables
Planes imaginary lines giving depth to the stage
Curtain Line the line where the curtain will open and close
Grid Holds everything, for Procenium stages
Trap door Thing on the ground that traps you
Strike To remove or take down something on set (the most dangerous time)
