| precision | Gauge of how exact a measurement is |
| significant figure | All the digits of a measurement, plus the last which is estimated |
| controlled experiment | Experiment with only one manipulated variable |
| thermometer | Instrument to measure temperature |
| hypothesis | proposed answer to a question |
| conversion factor | Ratio of equivalent measurements that is used to convert a quantity from one unit to another |
| direct proportion | relationship between 2 variables that their ratio is constant |
| scientific law | statement that summarizes a pattern found in nature |
| length | straight line distance between 2 points |
| responding variable | variable that changes in response to a change in the manipulated variable |
| scientific notation | way of expressing a number as the product of a number between 1-10 and a power of 10 |
| scientific theory | well tested explanation for a set of observations or experimental results |
| observation | information obtained by the senses |
| inverse proportion | relationship in which one variable increases while the 2nd variable decreases |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| volume | the amount of space on object occupies |
| accuracy | closeness of a measurement to the true value of what is measured |
| density | ratio of a material's mass to its volume |
| slope | the steepness of a line |
| chemistry | study of composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter |
| physics | study of matter and energy, and the interactions between the 2 through forces and motion |
| manipulated variable | variable that causes a change in another variable |
