| Matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass |
| Physical Property | characteristics of matter that you can measure directly |
| Mass | amount of matter in an object |
| Volume | how much space and object takes up |
| Displacement | the occupation by a submerged body or part of a body of a volume which would otherwise be occupied by a fluid |
| Meniscus | the curved upper surface of a liquid in a tube |
| Density | amount of matter present in a certain volume of a substance |
| Temperature | measure of how hot or cold something is |
| Thermometer | an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature |
| Celsius | the scale temperature in which water freezes at 0* and boils at 100* under standard conditions |
| Fahrenheit | the scale temperature in which water freezes at 31* and boils at 212* under standard conditions |
| Magnetism | physical property of being magnetic (attracts certain types of metals) |
| Magnet | a piece of iron that exhibits properties of magnetism |
| States of Matter | physical form (such as solid, liquid and gas) that matter can exist in |
| Solid | state of matter that has a definite volume and shape |
| Liquid | state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
| Gas | state of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape |
| Change of State | physical change that occurs when matter changes from one state to another |
| Freezing | phase transition when a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing point |
| Melting | physical process that results in the phase transition of a substance from a solid to a liquid |
| Evaporation | process by which a liquid changes into a gas |
| Condensation | process by which a gas changes into a liquid |
| Physical change | is a change when a new substance is not formed |
| Chemical change | irreversable chemical reaction resulting in formation of new substance |
