SCI8-Waves
The properties of waves (EPISD 8th grade)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Wave | A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. |
| Crest | The top of a transverse wave |
| Rest | The middle of a transverse wave |
| Trough | The bottom of a transverse wave |
| Transverse | A wave that looks like an ‘S’ |
| Longitudinal | A wave that looks like a long slinky with bunched coils |
| Compression | The compacted part of a longitudinal wave |
| Rarefaction | The part of a longitudinal wave that is not bunched up |
| Surface | A wave with transverse and longitudinal properties |
| Medium | What a wave travels through |
| Media | The plural of “medium” |
| Mechanical | Waves that need particles (or a medium) to travel through |
| Electromagnetic | Waves with electric and magnetic properties |
| Vacuum | An electromagnetic wave can travel through this |
| Speed | Every electromagnetic wave has this in common |
| Speed of light | The fastest thing in the world |
| Wavelength | The distance it takes to complete one wave cycle |
| Amplitude | A wave’s energy (rest to crest on a transverse wave) |
| Frequency | The number of wavelengths in a certain amount of time |
| Hertz | What frequency is measured in |
| 1,270 km/hr | Speed of sound |
| 300,000 km/s | Speed of light |
| Refraction | The bending of a wave as it changes media |
| Reflection | When a wave bounces off of a surface |
| Diffraction | When a wave bends or moves around an object |
