Wave A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another.
Crest The top of a transverse wave
Rest The middle of a transverse wave
Trough The bottom of a transverse wave
Transverse A wave that looks like an ‘S’
Longitudinal A wave that looks like a long slinky with bunched coils
Compression The compacted part of a longitudinal wave
Rarefaction The part of a longitudinal wave that is not bunched up
Surface A wave with transverse and longitudinal properties
Medium What a wave travels through
Media The plural of “medium”
Mechanical Waves that need particles (or a medium) to travel through
Electromagnetic Waves with electric and magnetic properties
Vacuum An electromagnetic wave can travel through this
Speed Every electromagnetic wave has this in common
Speed of light The fastest thing in the world
Wavelength The distance it takes to complete one wave cycle
Amplitude A wave’s energy (rest to crest on a transverse wave)
Frequency The number of wavelengths in a certain amount of time
Hertz What frequency is measured in
1,270 km/hr Speed of sound
300,000 km/s Speed of light
Refraction The bending of a wave as it changes media
Reflection When a wave bounces off of a surface
Diffraction When a wave bends or moves around an object
