Stereotypes

Stereotypes as a form of social categorisation, prejudice discrimination

Social categorisation the process of identifying a person as a member of a certain group because of features they share - gender, ethnicity, uniforms, accents, style of dress group vs individual
Stereotypes are a form of social categorisation - they are based on what others think of as shared features. These are used to put people in boxes - making them seem more similar than they are
stereotypes irrl ** we do not like to be stereotyped because it means that we aren't individuals If a person from an unidentifiable group, our first impressions can form the basis of stereotypes - and these first impressions can lead us to hold expectations~
Prejudice holding a negative attitude towards the members of a group based solely on their membership of that group usually based on visible differences between people over which we have no control
Discrimination the positive or negative behaviour that is directed towards a social group and its member - ignoring, bullying, put-downs, genocide
prejudice vs discrimination prejudice is an attitude and discrimination is a behaviour arising from prejudice
Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly and is disadvantaged because of a personal characteristic protected by the law e.g. Not getting a job coz of gender
Indirect discrimination occurs when treating everybody the same way disadvantages someone because of a personal characteristic Employer refuse allow head coverings.
general attitude&behaviour of bigots Generally, the attitudes and behaviour of a person who is bigoted are often affected by the person’s belief that people from different groups have different personal characteristics and abilities feel superior --> inferior
