how did we discover this language? their existence is inferred from studying the languages that descended from theirs

how did the european encounter with this language contribute to the discovery of PIE? the sanskrit language was more perfect than greek, more copious than latin, and more exquisitely refined than either, yet bore strong affinity for both

what does cognate literally mean? born together, words that have a common ancestor, kindred, related cousins
what does derivatives/ borrowings literally mean? a derived form, transformation
