Basic memory terms

| Encoding | The processing of information into the memory system |
| Serial position effect | The tendency to best recall the last and first items in a list |
| Sensory memory | The immediate recording of sensory information |
| Flashbulb memory | A clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event |
| Rehearsal | The conscious repetition of information to encode it into storage |
| Storage | The retention of encoded information over time |
| Spacing effect | Trying to memorize a large bit of information in spaced out periods of time |
| Short term memory | The capacity to store a small amount of information for a short period of time |
