Basic memory terms

TermDefinition
Memory The persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information
Encoding The processing of information into the memory system
Serial position effect The tendency to best recall the last and first items in a list
Sensory memory The immediate recording of sensory information
Flashbulb memory A clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event
Rehearsal The conscious repetition of information to encode it into storage
Storage The retention of encoded information over time
Spacing effect Trying to memorize a large bit of information in spaced out periods of time
Short term memory The capacity to store a small amount of information for a short period of time
