Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| amplitude | the maximum distance the wave vibrates from its rest position (height) Measures energy of wave |
| compression | The region in a compression wave where the medium becomes crowded together and becomes more dense |
| crest | highest point of a transverse wave |
| frequency | the number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point each second |
| longitudinal Wave | same as a compression wave |
| mechanical wave | a wave that requires a medium |
| medium | substance through which a wave travels |
| rarefaction | less dense region of a compression wave |
| transverse wave | a wave in which the medium(material) moves back and forth at right angles to the direction of the wave |
| trough | the lowest point of a transverse wave |
| wave | rhythmic disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space |
| wave length | the distance between crest to crest or trough to trough |
| compression wave | a wave in which the medium (matter) moves back and forth in the same direction as the wave |
| reflection | bouncing back of a wave as it meets a boundary or surface |
| refraction | bending of waves as they pass from one medium to another |
| diffraction | bending of waves as they go around and object or through an opening |
