TermDefinition
Cerebellum Base of brain; coordinates voluntary movements; enables type of nonverbal learning and memory
Medulla Top of spinal cord; life sustaining functions like heart beat, breathing, vomiting, salivation, etc. damage here can be fatal
Thalamus Top of brainstem; recieves info from all sensory systems (exept smell); routes higher brain regions; recieves info from brain that goes to cerebellum and medulla
Hypothalamus Bellow thalamus; monitors blood chemistry ; controls pituitary gland; key to motivational behaviors
Amygdala Top of brainstem; influence aggression and fear activated by emotions
Hippocampus Top of brainstem; keeps track of memories
Cerebrum Largest part of brain; controls conscious thoughts and actions
Cerebral cortex Outer layer of brain hemispheres (divided into 4 lobes) ;bodies control and info processing center
Occipital lobe Rear areas of cerebral cortex; vision center
Parietal lobe Top of rear area of cerebral cortex; includes sensory cortex
Temporal lobe Side area of cerebral cortex (above ears); hearing
Frontal lobe Front area of cerebral cortex; speaking and motor activity; higher order thinking; planning, judging, problem solving
Corpus callosum Band of natural fiber connecting 2 hemispheres of brain and carrying messages between them
Left hemisphere Controls right side of body; primary location for speech ; specialized for math ability, calculation , and logic
Right hemisphere Controls left side of body ; visual and special relations; perception primarily processed; music and art, creativity and intuition
Hormones Chemical messengers of endocrine system
Hypothalamus Controls master gland (pituitary gland)
Thyroid Controls metabolism
Adrenal glands Releases adrenaline which regulates heart rate, respiration, fight or flight
Ovaries Secretes female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
Testes Secretes male sex hormone testosterone
