Psychology Scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Phrenology Attempts to study the inter workings of mind by studying external surfaces of head.
Descartes philosophy of the body and mind They are not independent entities, but dual relationships among the two
Structuralism Study of basic elements that make up conscious mental processes.
Inheritable traits Sr. Francis Galton wanted to recognize importance of heredity and traits passed on from parents to children and how it influenced abilities and behaviors
Functionalism Attempt to study, measure, and understand behaviors as functions of concious mind and goals and purposes for those behaviors. Unders adaptation to ones enviornment
Gasalt Psychological approach that perception is more than the sum of individual parts and that structuralism and behaviorism are short sighted. Attempts to explain how humans perceive, organize, and make sense of the world.
Biological aproach Study of psychology emphasizing the importance of human biology including the structure and function of the nervous system and interactive parts of the body.
Behavioral aproach Emphasizes the study if observable behaviors because they are measurable, making it possible to apply scientific methods to studying behaviors.
Cognitive approach Study of how we process, store, retrieve and use information and how it influences thinking , language , problem solving, and creativity
Psychodynamic approach Study how unconscious motives and conflicts determine human behavior, feelings, and thoughts.
Humanistic approach Describes human behavior as evolving and self directed. Emphasizes that people have unique, individual identities and potential to fully develop
Sociocultural aproach Considers influence of culture and society on thoughts, feelings, and actions of the person.
